India’s Strategy in a Shifting Global Landscape
Kingston, Jamaica: India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has emphasized the country’s plans in light of a changing world, describing this period as a “world in transition” filled with geopolitical challenges, economic uncertainties, and shifting power structures.
Speaking at the University of the West Indies during his visit to the Caribbean, Jaishankar pointed to the “extraordinary times” the world is currently experiencing, characterized by ongoing conflicts and economic upheaval.
He highlighted various global issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, tensions in West Asia, and conflicts in Africa. Jaishankar remarked that such simultaneous crises were hard to predict just a few years ago. “We would have thought that major wars involving powerful nations were unlikely. But now, with the ongoing war in Ukraine and various conflicts in the Gulf, it’s clear that we are facing unprecedented challenges,” he noted.
Jaishankar also touched upon the disruptions in global supply chains, unpredictable trade climates, and rapid technological advancements like artificial intelligence and drones. He expressed that these factors are reshaping the global economic landscape, increasing concerns around market access and trade regulations.
According to him, the international system is becoming increasingly volatile, reflecting the long-term changes in global dynamics, such as shifting production centers and evolving consumption patterns.
He pointed out that global institutions have struggled to keep pace with recent crises, showcasing a growing strain in multilateral cooperation. “We’re currently navigating through 80 years of accumulated change in the global system,” he said.
Jaishankar outlined India’s response, emphasizing the country’s commitment to balancing national interests with global responsibilities. He highlighted India’s contributions during global emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic and climate-related disasters, particularly assistance to vulnerable countries in the Caribbean and surrounding areas.
India is also focusing on economic trends, including the establishment of Global Capability Centres and expanding free trade agreements, to adapt to a more divided global economy. Jaishankar noted India’s increasing role in global growth and trade engagement, stating that coordinating efforts among developing countries through platforms like the “Voice of the Global South” enables these nations to gain a better position in international discussions.
He stressed that India aims to be a constructive force in a fragmented world, promoting a model where national interests and global well-being coexist. “While many countries prioritize self-interest, India’s approach shows that it is possible to contribute positively to the global community while attending to our own needs,” he added.
Jaishankar’s remarks come as part of his three-nation tour, which includes visits to Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting India’s ongoing commitment to engaging with Caribbean nations.
