Insight: Israeli Concerns Amid U.S.-Iran Negotiations

As President Donald Trump suggests that an agreement with Iran could be on the horizon, Israeli leaders are expressing their views on what must be included to ensure their national security.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized on Wednesday that Israel and the United States are closely aligned in their objectives during the ongoing talks. “Our primary goal is to ensure that all enriched material is removed from Iran, and we need to dismantle Iran’s ability to enrich uranium,” he stated at a security cabinet meeting.

Trump remarked to reporters that productive conversations have taken place, hinting at a potential deal. However, he cautioned that failing negotiations would lead to more drastic steps from the U.S.

Israel’s main worry is not just the outcome of the negotiations but how they may impact Iran’s influence and military capacity in the region. Officials are concerned that a subpar agreement might allow Iran to retain strategic capabilities and rebuild its network of armed groups that pose a threat to Israel. Notably, Jerusalem wants to ensure any agreement will maintain military options should Iran violate the terms.

Israeli analysts identify four critical areas in these negotiations: dismantling Iran’s enrichment facilities, limiting its ballistic missile program, preventing the restoration of groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and ensuring Iran does not gain legitimacy or economic relief.

Regarding nuclear matters, former Israeli National Security Advisor Yaakov Amidror firmly stated, “Iran must not be allowed to enrich uranium.” Analyst Nadav Eyal added that Israel is pushing for stricter terms than those in previous agreements, seeking an extensive arms control framework.

Avner Golov, from the Mind Israel think tank, emphasized the need for the complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, urging against any agreement that could include sunset clauses that allow restrictions to expire over time. He called for rigorous monitoring without relying on Iranian approval.

Jonathan Ruhe from the Jewish Institute for National Security of America echoed these concerns, asserting that both Israel and the U.S. should share strict expectations for any deal, including the full and verifiable shutdown of Iran’s nuclear armaments.

Equally important to Israelis is the issue of Iran’s missile program, seen as a significant threat alongside the nuclear capabilities. Experts warn that without any constraints on these missiles, the implications could extend beyond Israel, even threatening Europe and the U.S. in the future.

Moreover, Israeli authorities are anxious about the prospect of sanctions relief potentially allowing Iran to re-establish economic support for its proxies in the region. Eyal insisted on the necessity for Iran to withdraw its backing from armed groups threatening Israel.

The overarching sentiment is a desire to avoid any agreement that could inadvertently legitimize the Iranian regime, with options for guarantees or compensations being major points of contention.

In summary, Israel’s fears center around maintaining security and preventing a resurgence of Iranian military influence, underscoring the critical nature of these negotiations as they move forward.
