Russian Strikes Claim 22 Lives in Ukraine Ahead of Ceasefire; Zelenskyy Denounces Assaults

Russian Strikes Leave Many Dead in Ukraine Just Before Proposed Ceasefire

On Tuesday, Russia launched drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people and injuring over 80 others. This escalation came just hours before Kyiv was set to declare a ceasefire and days before a unilateral pause by Moscow was expected.

The attacks hit cities including Kramatorsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Chernihiv in the afternoon. Reports indicate that at least 17 civilians lost their lives and 45 were injured due to glide bombs. Earlier, overnight strikes caused the deaths of five individuals and wounded 39, according to The Associated Press.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks on social media, highlighting the “absolute cynicism” of conducting celebratory events while bombing Ukrainian cities. He stated that Russia could choose to cease hostilities at any moment, emphasizing, “Every day, Russia could cease fire, and that would stop the war.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry had previously announced plans for a ceasefire on Friday and Saturday in honor of Victory Day, warning that it would respond if Ukraine interrupted the celebrations.

The United Nations welcomed the idea of a ceasefire, with Secretary-General António Guterres calling for immediate and lasting peace in line with international law.

Victory Day, observed annually on May 9 in Russia, marks the Allied victory over Nazi Germany.

Zelenskyy’s remarks underscore the ongoing tension, as past temporary truces have often failed to hold due to deep-seated mistrust between Ukraine and Russia. During previous ceasefires, violations occurred frequently, with both sides accusing each other of multiple breaches.

As the situation develops, the need for meaningful peace and stability remains urgent for the people of Ukraine.
