Market Update: SpaceX and Global Stocks Take a Hit
In a week marked by ups and downs, SpaceX experienced some significant movements in its stock. After a rough few days, the company’s shares fell below $150, which is the price they first opened at when trading on the Nasdaq began on June 12. Fortunately, SpaceX managed to bounce back, closing the day at $156.11, a modest increase of 1.0%.
Despite the rebound, the announcement of a bond offering from Elon Musk’s company stirred concerns among investors. Analysts at Swissquote Bank, led by Ipek Ozkardeskaya, noted that this move to finance elevated spending on AI and infrastructure via debt reopens discussions about whether big tech firms are stretching their finances too thin.
Meanwhile, South Korean chip giants SK Hynix and Samsung saw their stock prices plummet by over 12%, contributing to a 10% drop in the Kospi index. Steve Sosnick from Interactive Brokers commented that when markets experience rapid gains, they often suffer sharp declines at unexpected times, indicating a correction period.
Japan’s market also faced challenges, with the Nikkei 225 index falling by 3.6%. Companies like SoftBank, Tokyo Electron, and Advantest saw significant losses, each dropping more than 2%.
Oil prices also declined, as activity in the Strait of Hormuz surged. This increase in traffic was linked to a recent US-Iran agreement that aims to reduce tensions in the region. The temporary easing of US sanctions drew attention, raising hopes for an increase in oil supply. As of late afternoon GMT, Brent crude dropped 1.1% to $77.08 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate also fell by about 1% to $73.21.
