New Delhi: Buzz Around Ministerial Reshuffle Intensifies Following Kurian’s Resignation
George Kurian’s recent resignation as the Minister of State for Minority Affairs has stirred speculations about a possible reshuffle in the cabinet ahead of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, which is set to begin in the latter half of July.
Kurian’s resignation, expected since the end of his Rajya Sabha term, has officially created a vacancy. Additionally, the Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, has also lost his Rajya Sabha membership, paving the way for at least one more open position.
There could be further changes if the BJP decides to adhere to the ‘one man-one post’ policy. This move could result in the resignation of Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra, who currently lead the BJP units in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, respectively, while also serving as Ministers of State in finance and urban development.
Talks of a reshuffle are fueled by the need to revitalize certain ministries that seem to be struggling to keep pace with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dynamic leadership. Additionally, political dynamics are shifting, particularly with the rise of Shiv Sena (Shinde) after six MPs switched from the Uddhav Thackeray faction.
Moreover, BJP insiders are curious if the party’s representation from West Bengal will expand following their unexpected success in the state elections in May.
While Kurian’s resignation was anticipated, his appointment as minister had initially raised eyebrows. After serving in the BJP’s Kerala unit, many were surprised when Modi selected him to take on a ministerial role. His appointment was seen as a recognition of his dedicated work without any prior expectation of reward. Kurian’s Rajya Sabha term officially ended on June 22.
