Roy Kapur Productions Wins Court Ruling for “Matka King”

Roy Kapur Productions has received favorable news from the Bombay High Court regarding its web series, “Matka King.” This decision allows the show, starring Vijay Varma, to continue streaming on Prime Video without legal hindrance.

Details from the court proceedings reveal that the legal challenge came from Ms. Tanuja Bhagat, who claimed rights over the title “Matka King.” She argued that the series infringed on her family’s legacy, asserting it portrayed the story of her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat, who she described as the original “Matka King.” She sought an injunction to prevent the series from being released.

The case was brought before Justice Sharmila Deshmukh on April 15, 2026. After considering arguments from both sides, the court decided not to grant any immediate restrictions on Roy Kapur Productions or its partners.

At the follow-up hearing on April 20, the plaintiff’s attorney indicated that they would withdraw the suit. The court subsequently dismissed the case, allowing “Matka King” to move forward unimpeded.

The series debuted on Prime Video on April 17, 2026. Directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, “Matka King” is a period drama set in 1960s Bombay, focusing on Brij Bhatti, played by Vijay Varma, who transforms the underground Matka gambling scene into a widespread sensation.

Alongside Varma, the cast features Saie Tamhankar, Kritika Kamra, and Gulshan Grover, with notable performances from Siddharth Jadhav, Jamie Lever, Girish Kulkarni, and Bharat Jadhav.

Produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and others under Roy Kapur Films, “Matka King” has garnered attention as one of the standout digital releases of the month, with the recent court ruling ensuring its uninterrupted streaming.
