University of Essex Spinout Advances Agricultural Robotics with New Funding

Versatile RobotX, a startup emerging from the University of Essex, has successfully raised over £1 million through a combination of equity investment and grant funding. This financial boost aims to speed up the launch of its advanced robotic technology in agriculture.

The funding includes support from the British Design Fund (BDF) and grants from two government initiatives: Innovate UK’s Growth Catalyst Investor Partnerships and the Defra Farming Innovation Programme.

Founded by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and Dr. Vishwanathan Mohan, Versatile RobotX is focused on creating robots that can handle and harvest crops autonomously. Their goal is to tackle the current labor shortages in farming and improve efficiency during harvest.

The robots utilize sophisticated technology, including embedded artificial intelligence, machine vision, and robotic arms, to carry out the delicate task of harvesting crops. This technology has already been tested in real-world settings by commercial farms in the UK, such as Wilkin & Sons and JEPCO.

The newly secured funding will be used to prepare these modular robots for mass production, expand trials to include more types of crops, and launch a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model for farms both in the UK and abroad.

Professor McDonald-Maier highlighted the pressing challenges in agriculture, such as labor shortages and food security. He stated, “This funding will help us move from successful pilot tests to actual commercial use, making advanced robotics more affordable and accessible for farmers around the globe.”

Dr. Mohan emphasized the feedback from growers, who often cite cost, reliability, and ease of use as major hurdles to adopting automation. He mentioned that this funding will enable the team to improve manufacturing processes, enhance customer relations, and illustrate how the RaaS model can be a useful solution for farms of all sizes.
