India Women’s Hockey Team Draws 2-2 With China in World Cup Opener

The Indian women’s hockey team faced a challenging start to the Hockey World Cup as they drew 2-2 against China in their opening match on August 16. After the game, head coach Sjoerd Marijne shared his concerns about the refereeing decisions made during the match.

Marijne took to social media to express his disappointment, particularly regarding a penalty stroke awarded to China in the last minute of the first quarter. He posted a clip of the incident, suggesting that the Chinese player had dragged the ball, which is against the rules. Marijne mentioned that he asked for clarification from the International Hockey Federation (FIH), but was told that the action was not considered dragging.

“Good to know, this is apparently NOT dragging,” Marijne wrote, emphasizing the confusion over the ruling and how it affected his team’s strategy.

Match Summary: India vs. China

India started the match on a high note, taking the lead in the eighth minute with a goal from Navneet Kaur. After a free hit, Neha assisted Navneet, who skillfully found the back of the net. The first quarter saw India dominate, with Baljit and Lalremsiami creating multiple problems for China on the wings.

However, just as India seemed to be in control, a penalty stroke was awarded to China after Shilpi Dabas allegedly obstructed China’s Zhang Ying. Despite India’s challenge through a video referral, the decision stood, and Zhang successfully converted the penalty, leveling the score at 1-1.

India bounced back in the 24th minute, with Deepika scoring from a penalty corner. China challenged the decision, but their effort was unsuccessful, allowing India to hold a 2-1 lead at halftime.

After the break, China surged forward, putting pressure on the Indian defense. Goalkeeper Savita, marking her 314th international match, made crucial saves to keep India ahead. Yet, in the 39th minute, China equalized when Ma Ning netted a penalty corner.

In the final quarter, India showed some attacking spirit again, with Navneet attempting to set up Lalremsiami, but the Chinese defenders thwarted the opportunity. China then received a green card, temporarily reducing them to 10 players, but India couldn’t capitalize on the advantage.

As the match came to a close, India was again denied a penalty corner when Navneet was stopped in the circle. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, earning India a point against the Olympic silver medalists.

Looking ahead, India will face South Africa on August 18, while England secured a 4-0 victory against South Africa in another Pool D match on the same day. Coach Marijne’s criticisms of the officiating are sure to keep the conversation going as the tournament progresses.
