Russia Launches Major Attack on Ukraine, Civilians Suffer
In a significant escalation, Russia launched a massive strike on civilian areas in Ukraine using hundreds of drones and missiles, resulting in at least 16 deaths and over 80 injuries. This expansive attack lasted several hours, beginning in daylight and extending into the night, according to Ukrainian officials.
Authorities reported that nearly 700 drones, alongside multiple ballistic and cruise missiles, were directed primarily at civilian targets. This attack marked the largest aerial offensive in approximately two weeks.
A resident of Kyiv, Tetiana Sokol, shared her frightening experience as two missiles struck near her home. “We were in shock, not knowing where to run. I grabbed my dog and escaped,” she recounted, highlighting the chaos and fear that engulfed her neighborhood.
Significant Damage in Dnipro Region
This strike came amid ongoing challenges for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, especially in the Dnipro region, where nearly 800,000 homes lost power and heating as a result of previous Russian assaults.
Moscow’s forces have consistently targeted civilians since their invasion began over four years ago, leading to significant casualties. The United Nations estimates that around 15,000 civilians in Ukraine have lost their lives due to these attacks.
Zelenskyy’s Efforts for Air Defense
The latest wave of attacks coincided with a trip by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Germany, Norway, and Italy, where he sought enhanced air defense systems to shield against Russian missiles. While Ukraine has made strides in developing its arms industry, officials admit they still need advanced systems like the U.S. Patriot air defense.
“Securing better air defenses is our top priority,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the urgent need for international support. He also noted issues surrounding a blocked financial aid package from the European Union, which he hopes to resolve rapidly.
Continued Violence Across Ukraine
The recent bombardment is the largest since a notable assault last month, which saw nearly 1,000 drones and missiles fired in a single day.
In Kyiv alone, four deaths were reported overnight, including that of a 12-year-old child. The attack caused extensive damage to various structures, including residential buildings, hotels, and shopping centers.
In other regions, heavy casualties were reported. Odesa experienced nine fatalities, while the Dnipro region saw three women killed and numerous others injured.
Ukrainian officials have labeled these attacks as war crimes, underscoring the urgent need for accountability. Air force reports indicated that Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 667 out of 703 incoming threats during the assault.
In a counter-attack, Russian officials reported casualties in the Tuapse region from Ukrainian strikes, illustrating the ongoing cycle of violence between the two nations.
As the situation remains tense, calls for global attention and action against these assaults grow louder.
