Russia and Ukraine Exchange Blame Over Orthodox Easter Truce Breaches

Brief

Russia and Ukraine exchanged accusations of numerous attacks on Sunday, raising doubts about a ceasefire announced by the Kremlin for Orthodox Easter that seemed to fall apart less than a day after it started.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 32-hour ceasefire for the Easter holiday, ordering troops to cease fighting from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to this pause but warned that Kyiv would react swiftly to any violations.

However, this temporary ceasefire quickly seemed ineffective. The Ukrainian military reported 2,299 violations by early Sunday morning, which included attacks, shelling, and small drone activity, although they noted no use of long-range weapons.

A Ukrainian officer informed The Associated Press that Russian forces continued their assaults despite the declared truce. In response, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian troops committed 1,971 violations, including drone attacks in the border regions, which allegedly injured civilians.

The regional leader in Russia’s Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, mentioned that two civilian bodies were recovered after an alleged Ukrainian attack on Saturday.

These mutual allegations reflect ongoing deep distrust between both nations and highlight challenges in maintaining even temporary halts in fighting. Previous ceasefire attempts have often failed, with both sides routinely casting blame. A similar truce declared by Putin last Easter also collapsed amid accusations.

As the conflict stretches on, many remain skeptical about any ceasefire’s effectiveness, echoing the sentiments of local residents like Irena Bulhakova, who expressed doubt about the possibility of peace during her Easter gathering outside Kyiv.

Reflecting on the spirit of Easter, she said, “Good triumphs over darkness, and we hope for that very much.”
