Selena Gomez Talks Mental Health and Bipolar Disorder Journey
Actress and singer Selena Gomez has been open about her mental health struggles after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This important part of her story came to light during a 2020 Instagram Live chat with fellow Disney alum Miley Cyrus. For Gomez, learning about her diagnosis was a relief, even though the journey has been challenging.
On a recent episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Gomez, who co-founded the mental health platform Wondermind, shared more about her experience leading up to her diagnosis. She revealed that her husband, fellow musician Benny Blanco, asked if she had known about her condition before it was officially diagnosed.
“I knew something was off, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” Gomez explained. She shared her frustration with having to visit multiple therapists before getting the correct diagnosis.
Gomez emphasized the importance of perseverance in the face of mental health challenges. “I’m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it,” she said.
Benny Blanco mentioned that Gomez sometimes goes through manic episodes without realizing it. “She’ll start to recognize it after it’s happening, but sometimes she doesn’t even remember it,” he noted.
Gomez expressed how coping with these episodes can be tricky. “It’s delicate because you’re not really supposed to talk to someone when they’re deeply in it,” she said. However, she feels that she is getting better at recognizing these moments. “I’m not ashamed at all, because I can catch them a bit quicker,” she added.
The singer also shared that having a supportive partner like Blanco helps her navigate her condition. “It’s helpful to have someone who understands and meets you where you are,” she said.
Since her diagnosis, Gomez feels she can live more freely. “People shame others for going to therapy or not understanding it, but it’s not for everyone. For me, it finally allowed me to understand why I handle things differently,” she said.
Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder affects about 2.8% of adults in the U.S. each year, with symptoms ranging from extreme highs (mania) to severe lows (depression). The condition can make everyday tasks challenging.
Manic episodes usually involve symptoms such as increased energy, decreased need for sleep, and fast speech. Conversely, depressive episodes can leave individuals feeling hopeless and lethargic.
Gomez reminded listeners that a diagnosis doesn’t define a person. “It’s just informative to seek help and listen to resources that can guide you,” she stated, instilling a message of hope for anyone facing similar struggles.
Getting Help
The Mayo Clinic encourages anyone experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder to seek professional help. Diagnosis may involve physical exams, mental health assessments, and monitoring mood and sleep patterns.
Taking care of one’s health by ensuring adequate sleep, following prescribed treatments, and steering clear of drugs and alcohol are vital steps in managing the condition.
Selena Gomez’s openness about her mental health journey serves as a reminder that help is available, and understanding is key in navigating the complexities of mental illness.
