New Pancreatic Cancer Vaccine Shows Encouraging Results in Initial Human Trial

A new experimental vaccine for pancreatic cancer is showing promising results in its first trial involving humans. Dr. Jessica Gray, a family medicine physician, shared that this vaccine specifically targets the KRAS mutation, which is common in many cases of pancreatic cancer. Remarkably, it produced an immune response in 90% of the high-risk patients involved in the trial. Dr. Gray also projected a timeline of about 5 to 7 years before the vaccine might be available for public use. She emphasized the high lethality of pancreatic cancer and highlighted the advancements being made in cancer treatments.

In a separate study, researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine discovered that popular over-the-counter anti-aging supplements taken by many Americans could potentially hinder cancer treatments. These supplements, containing vitamin B3 derivatives like nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), nicotinamide riboside (NR), and nicotinamide (NAM), may allow cancer cells to survive chemotherapy.

The study, published in the journal Cancer Letters, revealed that while these compounds help the body produce NAD+, a molecule essential for generating energy and repairing cellular damage, they may also enable pancreatic cancer cells to resist chemotherapy damage. In laboratory and animal tests, these supplements appeared to shield cancer cells from three common chemotherapy drugs: oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil, and gemcitabine.

Jordan Winter, the study’s lead author, expressed concern over the use of NAD+-boosting supplements during active cancer treatment. He underscored the need for further research into these supplements’ interactions with cancer therapies. While the study points out that these B3 derivatives are generally safe for healthy individuals, they could be risky for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Winter advised these patients to consult their oncologists before using any over-the-counter supplements. He noted that while the study results are significant, they were based on controlled lab settings, and more research is needed to understand how these supplements may impact human patients.

The study took a focused stance on pancreatic cancer, meaning the results may not apply to other types of cancer or different chemotherapy regimens. As researchers continue to explore this field, they emphasize that what is deemed natural does not always equate to safety, especially in complex situations like cancer treatment.
