Zelenskyy Dispatches Ukrainian Drone Specialists to Bolster US Bases in Jordan

Ukraine to Aid U.S. Military Bases in Jordan with Drone Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine will send interceptor drones and a team of drone specialists to bolster the protection of U.S. military bases in Jordan. This move comes in response to escalating tensions linked to the situation in Iran, as reported in an interview with The New York Times.

Zelenskyy mentioned that the request from the U.S. was made on Thursday, and Ukrainian forces responded promptly, sending the specialized team the very next day. “We reacted immediately,” he stated. “I said, yes, of course, we will send our experts.”

As of now, the White House has not confirmed this development.

The U.S. and allied Gulf states are currently focused on intercepting numerous Iranian missile and drone attacks, which have been launched in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli operations that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. These strikes have targeted various locations, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, causing casualties among U.S. forces as well.

Iran’s use of Shahed drones has highlighted a significant cost disparity in military defenses. While a single Patriot missile interceptor can cost around $3.8 million, the Iranian drones are valued between $20,000 and $50,000. This discrepancy raises concerns about the effectiveness and efficiency of traditional air defense systems against the more affordable drones.

Patrycja Bazylczyk from the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies noted that Iran leverages these drones to maintain a tactical advantage without matching its adversaries’ military power directly. “Drones allow Iran to exert influence at a low cost,” she explained. She emphasized the need to target the sources of these drone attacks rather than just responding to each individual threat.

In a related context, U.S. Central Command has issued warnings to Iranian civilians, indicating the regime’s practice of launching operations from densely populated areas, raising risks for innocent bystanders.

As military tensions rise, this collaborative effort between Ukraine and the U.S. marks an important step in addressing the complex challenges facing the region.
