Sri Lanka Postpones Afghanistan Tour Amid Tensions in the Middle East
Sri Lanka has decided to indefinitely postpone their upcoming cricket tour of Afghanistan, which was set to take place in the United Arab Emirates. This decision comes in response to rising tensions in West Asia, which have made it impossible to hold the six-match series safely.
Originally scheduled from March 13 to 25, the tour included three T20 internationals and three One-Day Internationals in Sharjah and Dubai. However, ongoing conflicts in the region have complicated travel and raised security concerns, prompting both cricket boards to agree that the matches could not proceed as planned.
A Sri Lanka Cricket official remarked, “We had to cancel because of the flight situation and the ongoing fighting in the region.”
The series was expected to kick off with three T20 matches in Sharjah, followed by three ODIs in Dubai. This would have marked a significant event, as it was set to be Afghanistan’s first bilateral series hosting Sri Lanka, albeit at a neutral location.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated following strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28, which led to retaliatory attacks by Tehran. This situation has caused disruptions in air travel across the Gulf, with Dubai airport even halting operations briefly due to concerns about drones and missiles.
As flight routes were affected, moving teams, their support staff, and equipment to the UAE became increasingly difficult. Therefore, both cricket boards mutually agreed to postpone the tour.
Afghanistan faces a unique challenge as they are one of the few international teams that cannot host matches in their own country due to security issues. As a result, they typically conduct their home series in places like India or the UAE, making this tour an important part of their international schedule.
This postponement means that some exciting developments will have to wait, such as Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran’s anticipated start as captain and the debut of Sri Lanka’s new head coach, Gary Kirsten.
The broader geopolitical tensions have already affected various teams traveling through the region, leading to delays and complications in their scheduling.
