Occupied Jerusalem: Tensions Escalate as Three Palestinians Are Killed in West Bank

On Sunday, Palestinian officials and the Israeli military announced that three Palestinians lost their lives during an assault by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. This incident marks the second deadly event in less than 48 hours.

The Palestinian health ministry reported that two individuals, Thaer Faruq Hamayel, 24, and Farea Jawdat Hamayel, 57, were shot in the town of Abu Falah, situated northeast of Ramallah. However, specific details about when the shooting occurred were not provided.

In a statement shared on social media, Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh condemned what he called a “brutal attack on innocent citizens.” He revealed that besides the fatalities, seven others were injured in the violence.

The Israeli military responded by stating that their forces were sent to the Abu Falah area after receiving reports of an attack on Palestinians by Israeli civilians near their homes. They confirmed that two Palestinians died due to gunfire, while another individual reportedly succumbed to suffocation.

Major General Avi Bluth, the head of the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank, labeled the incident as “unacceptable.” He assured that there would be “zero tolerance for civilians who take the law into their own hands,” emphasizing that such actions do not reflect the broader Jewish community or the State of Israel.

Tensions in the occupied West Bank have surged since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted in October 2023, leading to ongoing violence despite a recently established ceasefire.

Just the day before, another fatal shooting involved a Palestinian man in Wadi al-Rakhim, where an attack by Israeli settlers also left his brother injured. Mohammad Rabai, the head of the Tuwani village council, claimed that settlers had invaded homes in the area and assaulted the family of 27-year-old Amir Mohammad Shnaran, who later died from his injuries.

The Israeli military acknowledged that troops and police responded to reports of a “violent confrontation” between Israelis and Palestinians in that area, and an investigation into the incidents is currently underway.

According to recent figures from the Palestinian health ministry, at least 1,043 Palestinians—many of whom are militants but also numerous civilians—have been killed in the occupied West Bank since the onset of the Gaza war. Meanwhile, Israeli sources reported that around 45 individuals, including both civilians and soldiers, have died in Palestinian attacks or during military operations.
