MSF Halts Non-Essential Services at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital

MSF Halts Nonessential Operations at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital Due to Security Risks

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, has paused its noncritical medical services at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, citing significant safety concerns. This decision, announced on January 20, was made in light of troubling reports regarding hospital management and a series of alarming incidents at the facility.

Details about the suspension were not widely communicated, and it remains unclear when the announcement first became public. The MSF website, which includes this update, was last modified on February 11.

Concerns Over Armed Presence

MSF has raised serious issues about reported encounters with armed individuals within the hospital grounds, as well as incidents of intimidation and arbitrary arrests of patients. Although these events did not occur in MSF’s operating areas, they pose substantial risks to both staff and patients. In a statement, MSF emphasized the importance of keeping hospitals free from military influence to ensure safe medical care. The organization has urged all parties in the conflict, including Hamas and Israeli forces, to respect medical facilities and protect civilians.

Hospital’s Response to Allegations

On the other side, Nasser Hospital has rejected MSF’s claims, calling them “false and misleading.” Hospital officials argue that the Gaza Strip is under a serious state of emergency, with isolated unlawful acts occurring within a broader societal context. They emphasized that a civilian police presence has been established to protect patients and staff, urging MSF to reconsider its statements regarding safety.

In a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), they reiterated that they have intelligence suggesting Hamas uses Nasser Hospital for military purposes, which aligns with longstanding accusations about military operations being conducted within civilian areas.

Hamas has consistently denied these allegations, claiming that they do not use hospitals or civilian facilities for military actions.
