TEHRAN: Iran has communicated its terms to the United States, through mediators, regarding the reopening of the vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
As tensions remain high following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began in late February, both sides find themselves at a stalemate. Iran has continued to restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil and gas shipments, while the US aims to apply pressure on Iran’s economy by targeting its ports.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament and chief negotiator, stated, “Our messages and conditions have been clearly communicated to the other party through various mediators.” He emphasized that a return to the previously open state of the strait will only be possible if the US fulfills its commitments.
In a recent interview with Al-Jazeera, Mohsen Rezaei, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, mentioned that Iran has outlined its conditions to the US via Qatar. He listed the demands, which include an end to hostilities on all fronts, the release of Iran’s frozen assets, and the removal of the naval blockade.
Additionally, Iranian authorities noted that Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is scheduled to visit Tehran for discussions.
On the security front, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya central military command sent a stern warning to the United States on Sunday. The statement, broadcast by state television, threatened that any missteps by the US towards Iran could lead to attacks on its bases and interests across the region, promising “continuous, effective, and painful” responses without restraint.
