Calls Grow for Ban on Iran from Sports Events Amid Violence Against Protesters

A former head of Iran’s national wrestling team and critics of the Iranian government are urging major sports organizations to exclude Iran from competitions. This call comes in response to the government’s recent executions of protesters opposing its regime.

Wrestling, a sport deeply ingrained in Iranian culture, has seen devastating impacts due to the government’s response to demonstrations aimed at ending 47 years of authoritarian rule. A report from the London-based outlet Iran International revealed that a 15-year-old wrestler and protester, Parsa Lorestani, was killed by a government sniper during a protest in Khorramabad earlier this year.

Iranian-American Sardar Parshaei, former head coach of the national Greco-Roman wrestling team, expressed his sorrow over the loss of young athletes like Erfan Kari, who was only 20 when he was shot for participating in peaceful protests. Parshaei urged people to become advocates for imprisoned wrestlers who continue to risk their lives for freedom.

Prominent activist Masih Alinejad also highlighted the tragic loss of over 40,000 lives, including many athletes, in recent protests. She called for organizations like FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take a stand against the Iranian regime, which uses international events to legitimize its oppressive actions.

Afsoon Roshanzamir Johnston, the first American woman to win a wrestling medal at a world championship, expressed her distress about the ongoing violence in her homeland. She urged the global community to take action and support Iranian athletes while pressing for an end to the killings.

Parshaei emphasized the need for international governing bodies to block Iran from competitions as a show of solidarity with those suffering under the regime. Meanwhile, officials at the IOC have stated they will continue to work quietly with the Iranian Olympic community.

Dan Russell, from Wrestling for Peace, emphasized that neutrality should not equate to indifference when lives are at risk. He called for urgent measures to halt executions and ensure the safety of athletes who stand for change.

While many advocate for a ban on Iranian sports teams, some believe that competing could provide opportunities for more visible protests against the regime. British-Iranian expert Potkin Azarmehr pointed out that letting the wrestling team compete might allow for dissent to be displayed on an international stage.

This ongoing situation highlights the complicated intersection of sports and human rights, as athletes and activists work together to bring attention to the plight of those suffering under oppressive regimes worldwide.
