Improving Dental Health in West Virginia

Residents of West Virginia have long been the subject of jokes from folks in other states, often poking fun at things like wearing shoes or having all their teeth. While it’s easy to laugh these off, the truth is that dental health in the state has faced serious challenges for many years.

A recent study by WalletHub, which looked at dental health across the country, placed West Virginia at the bottom of the list. In fact, the state ranked 50th overall, trailing only Mississippi. This study included the District of Columbia, which is often counted among the states.

When breaking it down further, West Virginia was ranked 42nd for dental habits and care, and 51st for general oral health. The statistics reveal some concerning trends: the state is tied for 49th in the percentage of adults experiencing oral pain in the past year and tied for 49th regarding low life satisfaction due to dental issues. Additionally, it ranked last for the elderly population without natural teeth, as well as for adult smokers. West Virginia also has a high rate of sugar-sweetened drink consumption and a low number of dentists per person, ranking 48th in that category. Furthermore, only 50th in the percentage of adults who visited a dentist in the past year paints a rather grim picture.

However, there’s a silver lining. The study showed that West Virginia is 3rd in the country for the percentage of teenagers who visited the dentist in the last year. This may suggest that attitudes around dental health are starting to shift, particularly among younger generations.

Recognizing the importance of dental health, state lawmakers are working on several measures aimed at improving quality of life in West Virginia. Bills such as Senate Bill 568 and House Bill 5071 are geared toward creating the Oral Health and Cancer Rights Act. Additionally, Senate Bill 548 seeks to enhance transparency in dental health insurance, while House Bill 5108 aims to fund programs to help people quit smoking.

The uptick in dental visits among younger residents gives hope that recent policy initiatives are beginning to make a positive impact. Still, it’s concerning to see West Virginia rank so low across multiple categories in one study. It’s clear that elected officials and community leaders need to come together to address these issues and work towards better dental health for all West Virginians.
