Embracing the Analog Bag Trend: A Simple Way to Connect Offline

As the New Year approaches, many are looking for fresh ways to change habits. A popular trend on social media, known as the “analog bag,” encourages people to swap their phones for offline activities.

This idea gained traction thanks to TikTok creator Sierra Campbell. She shared her own version of an analog bag filled with fun items like a crossword book, watercolor kit, Polaroid camera, planner, and knitting supplies. Excited by her post, many others have shown off their own bags with creative contents, including magazines, card decks, and puzzles.

“I wanted a bag full of non-digital activities to replace my phone,” Campbell explained. She noticed that this practice significantly reduced her screen time and helped her engage in creative hobbies that foster connection instead of mindless scrolling. “I learned that the key to changing a habit is to replace it with something new,” she shared.

Understanding the Science of Habits

Experts like Dr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist from California, support the idea behind the analog bag. He explains that our brains form habits based on repeated behaviors. “Neurons that fire together wire together,” he said, emphasizing that every time we repeat a behavior—good or bad—we make it easier to do it again.

Research shows that habits often form in response to certain triggers, like stress or boredom, which lead to some sort of reward. When no alternative is available, we tend to fall back into old routines without even realizing it.

Dr. Amen suggests that substituting an old habit for a new one that triggers the same response is often more effective than simply trying to eliminate the behavior completely. For instance, if someone wants to cut back on coffee, it’s easier to switch to another drink instead of quitting cold turkey.

By introducing new activities that are engaging and stimulating, people can gradually weaken old habits and build a new routine that feels automatic.

Small Steps for Lasting Change

Dr. Amen advises that instead of vague intentions like “I’ll stop scrolling my phone,” individuals should choose specific, small actions they can easily integrate into their daily lives. For example, someone might decide to knit a few rows of a scarf during their commute or read a few pages of a book while waiting.

Campbell also shares practical uses for her analog bag. When hanging out with friends at a coffee shop, she pulls out a crossword puzzle to keep the conversation lively. Instead of taking countless pictures on her phone, she uses an instant camera, which encourages thoughtful snapshots of meaningful moments. She might even bring along a watercolor set to enjoy some creative time in a park.

“It’s amazing to see how this trend resonates with so many,” Campbell said, expressing the joy it has brought into her life.

In a world dominated by screens, the analog bag trend is a refreshing reminder to embrace creativity and connection in a simple, meaningful way.
