India and Australia Celebrate Trade Agreement Milestone
New Delhi, December 29: India and Australia are celebrating the third anniversary of their Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which has significantly boosted trade between the two countries.
Since the deal began three years ago, Indian exports to Australia have increased by 8% in the 2024-25 financial year. This rise has positively impacted India’s overall trade balance.
An exciting change is on the horizon for January 1, 2026, when all Australian tariff lines will drop to zero for Indian exports. This means that Indian products can enter Australia without extra taxes, opening up new opportunities for various industries.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal shared the news on social media, highlighting how the agreement has successfully translated intentions into tangible results. He noted that the ECTA has provided sustained growth in exports, better market access, and strengthened supply chains, which benefit Indian exporters, small businesses, farmers, and workers.
Goyal emphasized that many sectors, including manufacturing, textiles, chemicals, plastics, and pharmaceuticals, have reaped the benefits of this agreement. There has also been an increase in the export of petroleum products and gems and jewellery, with the latter seeing a 16% rise from April to November 2025.
Moreover, Indian agricultural products have gained popularity in Australia, with notable increases in the sales of fruits, vegetables, marine products, and spices. Coffee exports, in particular, have shown impressive growth. To facilitate smoother trading, both nations have established a Mutual Recognition Arrangement for organic products, which helps reduce compliance costs for exporters.
As negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) progress, the ECTA continues to play a vital role in strengthening India’s economic ties in the Indo-Pacific region. Goyal mentioned that this partnership aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative and the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047, signaling a shared future of prosperity and reliable trade between the two nations.
