Poland Intercepts Russian Aircraft Near Airspace
On Thursday, Poland responded quickly by scrambling its fighter jets after detecting a Russian reconnaissance aircraft close to its airspace. The country’s Operational Command shared on social media that the aircraft was intercepted and escorted out after being identified over international waters in the Baltic Sea.
Additionally, there were reports of other airspace incidents near Poland’s eastern border overnight. The command clarified that objects entering Polish airspace from Belarus were likely smuggling balloons, as they moved with the wind’s direction and speed.
Authorities assured that all flights were monitored by radar systems. To ensure safety, a portion of airspace over the Podlaskie Voivodeship was temporarily closed to civilian air traffic. Thankfully, no threats were identified against Poland, and officials are continuing to keep a close watch on the situation.
This incident follows another recent occurrence where Polish aircraft were scrambled as Russia conducted large-scale strikes against Ukraine.
Polish officials noted that NATO allies provided support during these operations, including Spanish aircraft for air policing and Dutch forces for air defense assistance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that more than 650 drones and over 30 missiles were launched by Russia just days before Christmas, targeting crucial infrastructure in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of lives due to these attacks, including a woman in the Kyiv region and a four-year-old child in the Zhytomyr region. He emphasized that these attacks, particularly during a holiday season meant for families, highlight Russia’s ongoing aggression and the urgent need for the world to push for peace.
