Former Pakistan Captain Critiques Indian U-19 Team’s Conduct in Asia Cup Final

In a recent interview, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed expressed concerns over the conduct of the Indian U-19 team during the Asia Cup final held on December 21. The much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan featured several intense moments, particularly as India chased the target set by Pakistan.

Tensions rose when Ali Raza dismissed the Indian captain early in the game, leading to a heated exchange with Ayush Mhatre. Another notable incident involved Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who reacted angrily after facing Raza’s bowling on his way back to the pavilion. Ultimately, Pakistan emerged victorious, clinching their second U-19 Asia Cup title with a commanding 191-run win.

Speaking exclusively to Telecom Asia, Sarfaraz, who is now part of the Pakistan U-19 coaching staff, remarked that the behavior displayed by the Indian team was markedly different from what he had encountered in previous matches against other Indian squads.

“I have played against many Indian teams, and they used to treat the game as just that—a game. But the behavior of this junior team was not acceptable throughout the final,” Sarfaraz stated.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining proper conduct in celebrations and noted that the Indian players seemed overly emotional during the game. Sarfaraz advised his players to celebrate respectfully and pointed out that some of the Indian players’ actions did not align with the spirit of cricket.

“I encouraged my players to celebrate, but to do so in a proper manner. The Indian players’ emotional reactions were not appropriate for the game,” he said.

Sarfaraz also highlighted the need for sportsmanship and urged his team to concentrate on their strengths during the final. “I instructed my players to play with good sportsmanship and to focus on their own performances,” he added.

Looking ahead, Sarfaraz mentioned that the team’s attention would now shift to preparing for the U-19 World Cup next year. He believes that their recent victory in the Asia Cup will serve as a significant morale booster for the players.
