India Affirms Its Commitment to Africa in Addressing at Africa Day 2026
In a heartfelt address on Africa Day 2026, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, emphasized the crucial partnership India shares with Africa. He noted that for a multipolar world to truly flourish, Africa must be recognized for its significant role.
Speaking at the event, Jaishankar highlighted ongoing communication with the African Union as they look forward to rescheduling the delayed India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-4). This summit was initially set to take place earlier this year but was postponed due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus, a decision made collaboratively with African partners.
“Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963,” Jaishankar stated. He expressed deep emotional ties between India and Africa, stating that both regions share not only a vast population but also a powerful alliance for global progress. He remarked that together, they could create a future filled with innovation and sustainability.
The minister stressed that human resource development is at the core of India’s engagement with Africa. He pointed out that India has consistently supported Africa in times of crisis, whether during the COVID-19 pandemic or natural disasters, resonating with the ancient Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” meaning the world is one family.
Jaishankar reaffirmed, “Africa is our partner, Africa is our priority.” He advocated for Africa’s rightful position in the reformed United Nations Security Council, along with India’s aspiration for a permanent seat.
He stressed the deep historical ties that bind India and Africa, rooted in shared experiences and cultures. Jaishankar reflected on the colonial past and how both regions stood together in the fight for freedom and dignity. He acknowledged that after independence, India and Africa began to forge confident partnerships as equal nations.
In today’s world, both regions are experiencing a resurgence, focusing on development strategies that align with their unique visions for the future—Viksit Bharat 2047 for India and Agenda 2063 for Africa.
Jaishankar mentioned ten principles guiding India’s approach towards Africa, first laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. He emphasized development partnerships, open markets, and a commitment to a secure and prosperous maritime order.
The theme for Africa Day 2026, “Africa: A Land of Rich Culture and Opportunities,” reflects the continent’s vibrancy, especially in a time where conflicts threaten many nations. Jaishankar reiterated that peace and security in Africa are vital for India, through efforts in peacekeeping and maritime cooperation.
Today, Jaishankar sees Africa on the brink of transformation, recognizing its vast potential and dynamic spirit. Similarly, India continues its journey of growth driven by innovation. Together, both regions are poised for a future filled with promise and progress.
