FIFA Apologizes Amid Controversy Over Abandoned Private Equity Plan
FIFA, the global governing body of football, has issued a formal apology to its member associations after a controversial plan to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup fell apart. President Gianni Infantino has faced calls for his resignation but has received strong support from FIFA’s executive leadership during a crisis meeting in Rabat.
The situation arose following a tumultuous week in the world of football governance, where Infantino had to withdraw a multi-billion-dollar proposal aimed at commercializing FIFA’s top international tournaments. Despite receiving intense public scrutiny and facing opposition from major European football associations, FIFA’s management team has stood firmly behind Infantino, emphasizing that he is the only democratically elected leader by all 211 member nations.
The crisis originated from a secret plan to create a commercial branch called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which was meant to oversee the commercial rights and operations for both the FIFA World Cup and the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup. This plan valued FFE at $20 billion.
According to leaked details, FIFA intended to sell up to a 20% stake in FFE to private investors for approximately $4.2 billion. To persuade voting members, FIFA promised substantial financial rewards, including a one-time payment of $20 million to each member association in early 2027 and a hike in standard funding from $8 million to $20 million for 2027-2030.
Although meant to secure funding for global football development, the proposal sparked significant anger over governance concerns, conflicts of interest, and the potential commercialization of football’s main events.
Opposition quickly rose from various parts of the world, with UEFA, the governing body for European football, at the forefront of the resistance. They threatened to boycott future World Cup tournaments if the plan continued. Many member bodies, including the Football Association of Wales, publicly distanced themselves from Infantino, while some executives expressed frustration at being left out of crucial discussions.
Tensions within FIFA escalated when Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom expressed his disapproval of the proposal in a memo to staff, calling the situation a “sad and reproachable series of events.” Faced with a potential revolt within the executive team, Infantino officially withdrew the FFE proposal on August 1, admitting it had created more division than unity.
The Crisis Meeting
In response to the turmoil, FIFA’s top officials convened in Rabat to address the unrest and to back Infantino. They acknowledged in a statement that serious procedural mistakes had been made and committed to conducting a thorough internal review of governance practices to prevent future errors. This review will culminate in a detailed report due at the next FIFA Council meeting.
While the leadership echoed support for Infantino, stating that the operational missteps did not violate FIFA’s legal framework, Infantino expressed his complete confidence in his team and sought to present a united front.
Growing Pressure
Despite the temporary backing from FIFA’s executive board, Infantino is facing increasing scrutiny. Critics believe the failed privatization attempt has damaged the trust between FIFA’s Zurich headquarters and national associations, particularly in Europe and parts of South America.
With the FFE proposal now behind them, FIFA plans to redirect its focus toward enhancing existing development programs, such as the standard FIFA Forward initiative.
