Aaron George Shines in Under-19 Asia Cup Against Pakistan
In the exciting Under-19 Asia Cup match held in Dubai on December 14, Aaron George stood out as India’s leading batsman. The young cricketer scored an impressive 85 runs off 88 balls, showcasing his skill and composure during a challenging day for the team. Although he missed out on a century, his performance highlighted his importance in India’s U19 lineup.
India faced a tough start, losing key players early on. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for just five runs, while captain Ayush Mhatre managed to score 38. Despite the setbacks, George remained steady, demonstrating maturity against a strong bowling unit from Pakistan.
He formed a solid partnership with Mhatre, contributing 49 runs, and later teamed up with Abhigyan Kundu to build a crucial 60-run partnership for the fifth wicket. This collaboration proved vital as India recovered after being at a shaky 113 for four.
George’s batting style focused more on timing rather than aggressive play. This strategy paid off well, as he struck 12 boundaries and a six, often drawing comparisons to the batting style of international star Sanju Samson, especially in how effortlessly he found gaps in the field.
His innings came to an end when he attempted a bouncer from Abdul Subhan. This unusual shot for George led to his dismissal, sending him back to the pavilion after a vital performance that anchored India through the middle overs.
Even though he couldn’t reach a century against Pakistan, this match marked George’s second consecutive score of over fifty in the tournament. His earlier contribution of 69 runs against the UAE in the tournament opener showcased his consistency.
George, hailing from Hyderabad and originally from Kerala, has had a remarkable rise in junior cricket. As captain of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy-winning team for Hyderabad, he ended a long wait for major age-group success in the region.
His performance statistics, with 341 and 373 runs in the last two seasons of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, underline his status as a dependable young player. Additionally, he has been recognized for his leadership skills, being selected as captain for India-B in the under-19 triangular series earlier this year.
Strong Family Support
Behind George’s accomplishments is a supportive family, especially his father, Easo Varghese. Easo had dreams of becoming a cricketer himself but had to put those dreams on hold. He played league cricket before shifting his focus to his son’s cricketing journey.
In addition to cricket, Aaron enjoys table tennis and basketball, and looks up to AB de Villiers for inspiration. He admires de Villiers’ ability to remain calm under pressure and his varied skills with the bat.
George has been on the selectors’ watch list since scoring an unbeaten 303 in the Vijay Merchant Trophy last season, a performance that garnered significant attention. His steady progression in junior cricket, marked by consistent performances, positions him as one of India’s promising young talents.
With his continued success in the Asia Cup, George is solidifying his place as a key player in India’s future cricket. His ability to handle pressure and bat through difficult situations sets him apart from many peers, promising a bright future ahead.
