Russia Warns of Retaliation Amid Ukraine Tensions
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov cautioned European governments against sending troops to Ukraine or seizing frozen Russian assets in support of Kyiv, stating that Russia is ready to respond to such actions.
While addressing the Federation Council, which is Russia’s upper house of parliament, Lavrov emphasized that Russia does not wish for war with Europe, but is prepared to act if it perceives an escalation from Western nations. He asserted, “We will respond to any hostile steps, including the deployment of European military forces in Ukraine and the expropriation of Russian assets.”
Lavrov also commented on former President Donald Trump, describing him as the “only Western leader” who understands the reasons behind the conflict, which he believes was “inevitable.” He acknowledged Trump’s interest in dialogue but noted that the former president is increasing sanctions on Russia.
In related developments, during a press briefing, Trump mentioned having discussions with leaders from France, Germany, and the UK about the conflict. He expressed concern about the high human cost of the war and indicated that decisions on future meetings would depend on responses from European leaders.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described a productive meeting with senior officials from the Trump administration regarding Ukraine’s reconstruction. He highlighted that this meeting was significant for planning the country’s recovery and economic revitalization.
Zelenskyy stated, “We discussed key elements for recovery and mechanisms for reconstruction.” He reassured that Ukraine would not delay efforts to achieve results, thanking Trump and his team for their support.
The discussions included updates on the framework for ending the war, focusing on both security guarantees with the U.S. and economic plans for reconstruction and joint investments.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in talks, declaring, “There will be no delays on our side,” as Ukraine continues to seek viable solutions for peace and recovery.
