SyracuseCoE Awards Funding to Innovative Startups
The Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE) has announced that two startups will receive funding through its Innovation Fund for 2025-26.
The Innovation Fund is designed to support emerging businesses in overcoming hurdles related to research and development. It draws financial backing from program members and aims to assist projects focusing on healthy buildings, clean energy, and sustainable communities.
The selected startups, KLAW Industries and PanLys Inc., will each receive $7,500 for their innovative projects.
KLAW Industries, based in Binghamton, New York, will use the funding to explore how to incorporate windowpane waste glass into high-performance, low-carbon concrete. The company aims to divert contaminated glass from landfills and transform it into a material that can replace cement in concrete mixes. They will collaborate with Mohammad Uzzal Hossain from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry for this research.
PanLys Inc. will use its funding to test its new technology designed to control harmful microorganisms in HVAC systems. By working with Syracuse University faculty, they will evaluate coated filters and in-duct solutions for microbial reduction, air quality, and energy efficiency in various building conditions. This startup focuses on creating safer indoor environments in places with high foot traffic, like hospitals and offices.
The projects were assessed by a panel of external reviewers who volunteered their time and expertise. The panel was made up of professionals from various organizations, including Jim D’Agostino, Jeff Fuchsberg, Indaria Jones, John Lawyer, and Tong Lin.
Bing Dong, co-director of SyracuseCoE, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to work with companies to turn research into real-world impact. Congratulations to KLAW Industries and PanLys!”
SyracuseCoE serves as New York State’s hub for Environmental and Energy Systems excellence. The Innovation Fund has so far invested over $640,000 in more than 60 projects throughout New York State and beyond, supported by the members of the SyracuseCoE Partner Program.
