Canada Prioritizes Domestic Security in Relations with India, Minister Emphasizes

Canada and India Seek to Strengthen Ties Despite Past Tensions

NEW DELHI: In a notable turn of events, Canada is looking to enhance its relationship with India, emphasizing domestic security and the rule of law. This comes after accusations made in 2023 that linked senior Indian diplomats to the murder of a Sikh activist, sparking tension between the two nations.

During a press briefing, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the need for Canada to diversify trade and improve connections with key countries, especially amidst challenges like U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand, currently on an official visit to India, stressed the importance of adhering to Canadian law in all engagements. “I emphasize our commitment to public security in every discussion,” Anand stated, following her meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, her remarks drew criticism from the Sikhs for Justice group, which claims she is prioritizing trade over the safety of Canadians and their sovereignty.

Relations between Canada and India have been tense, especially after then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that India was involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh separatist. India has refuted these allegations and accused Canada of sheltering separatist movements.

In a separate interview with Reuters, Anand expressed the importance of shielding Canadians from foreign interference and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.

On a positive note, both nations agreed to revive their partnership, focusing on areas like critical minerals, trade, and agriculture. India remains a crucial source of temporary foreign workers and international students for Canada, though a backlog in applications has emerged since Trudeau’s accusations last year.

Anand reinforced the value of Indian students in Canada, emphasizing the country’s support for educational ties.

Following her visit to India, Anand is set to travel to China, where relations with Canada are also strained.
