Trump Urges NATO Allies to Cut Russian Oil Imports
President Donald Trump has once again called for NATO allies to reduce their reliance on Russian oil. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, he claimed that NATO countries were unintentionally financing the conflict in Ukraine by continuing to buy Russian energy.
“Who has ever heard of funding a war against themselves?” Trump asked, highlighting the irony of the situation.
He pointed out that China and India are still significant buyers of Russian oil, criticizing European nations for not doing enough to curtail their imports, even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Countries like Hungary, Slovakia, France, Belgium, and Spain continue to import energy from Russia, with France being the second-largest European buyer of Russian energy.
Trump mentioned that some of these imports, particularly by France, are due to existing contracts that run until the early 2030s. These contracts require France to either buy the energy or face financial penalties.
During his address, Trump emphasized the need for all European nations to unite in their response to Russia. He warned that the U.S. is prepared to impose strict tariffs if Russia does not negotiate to end the war. “For those tariffs to really work, Europe needs to join us,” he said.
Trump plans to discuss the issue further with European leaders while attending the UN meetings this week. He closed his remarks by urging Europe to take immediate action against all energy purchases from Russia, stating, “We’re wasting time if we don’t.”
This call to action reflects ongoing tensions surrounding the Ukraine conflict and the broader geopolitical landscape.
