Afghanistan Marks Asia Cup Preparations with Victory Over Pakistan
In a thrilling encounter at Sharjah on August 2, Afghanistan delivered a strong message to Pakistan by claiming an 18-run victory just ahead of the Asia Cup. Initially, it seemed like Afghanistan’s batting was shaky, but a stellar performance from their bowlers turned the game around.
Winning the toss, Afghanistan decided to bat first but faced early challenges. With Rahmanullah Gurbaz dismissed quickly, concerns grew about their innings as Pakistan’s Faheem Ashraf impressed with four wickets for just 27 runs. However, Afghanistan’s spinners came through when it mattered most.
A pivotal partnership between Sediqullah Atal and Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 113 runs together, helped Afghanistan recover. Although the rest of the batting lineup struggled, this partnership allowed them to finish their innings with a score of 169 in 20 overs. Ibrahim Zadran’s solid knock of 65 runs off 45 balls earned him the Man of the Match award.
As Pakistan chased a target of 170, they lost early wickets due to a fiery spell from Fazalhaq Farooqi, who dismissed Saim Ayub for a golden duck and sent Sahibzada Farhan back to the pavilion shortly after. Afghanistan’s spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, and Noor Ahmed took command and prevented any significant partnerships from forming. Rashid Khan further established his record as the highest wicket-taker in T20Is, finishing with figures of 2 for 30.
Despite brief resistance from captain Salman Ali Agha and Fakhar Zaman, Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained control. Agha fell victim to Nabi’s sharp delivery, and the lower order struggled, leading to Pakistan’s final score of 151 for 9, 18 runs short of their target.
This victory boosts Afghanistan’s confidence as they head into the Asia Cup, showcasing their progress in T20 cricket. Meanwhile, Pakistan will need to address their weaknesses before beginning their campaign against Oman on September 12.
