Steve Witkoff Heads to Russia as Trump’s August 8 Peace Deadline Approaches

U.S. Envoy Heads to Russia Amid Tightening Sanctions

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, is set to travel to Russia on Wednesday. This visit comes just before the deadline set by President Donald Trump, who has called for a ceasefire by August 8. If Russia fails to comply, the U.S. plans to impose severe sanctions.

Despite the urgency, recent reports indicate that Witkoff’s mission may not bring significant progress in peace talks. President Trump had previously shortened the timeline for negotiations, initially giving Russian President Vladimir Putin 50 days to reach an agreement.

If a resolution is not found by Friday, the U.S. will start enforcing complete sanctions against nations that buy Russian oil. This strategy is aimed at reducing Russia’s financial power and its military actions in Ukraine.

Healthcare giant India and China are primary customers of Russian oil, and reports suggest that such sanctions may not deter them. They continue to show support for Russia, much to the U.S.’s dismay. Trump has expressed his intent to raise tariffs on India significantly due to its dealings with Russia, calling their actions “fueling the war machine.”

India’s foreign ministry has spoken out against the planned tariffs, labeling them “unjustified and unreasonable.” As tensions rise, Ukraine has accused India of supplying parts for Russian drones, which have been used offensively against civilians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned recent attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties. He emphasized that even though sanctions against Russia haven’t fully stopped its ambitions, they can still play a role in achieving peace. Zelenskyy urged for stronger global pressure to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.

As diplomatic efforts unfold, both Witkoff’s team and the Indian Embassy in Washington have yet to respond for further information.
