Dramatic Drop in Migrant Crossings at Darien Gap: From 82,000 to Just 10 During Trump Era

Migrants Leave Panama’s Darien Gap as Tough Immigration Policies Take Effect

The Darien Gap, a challenging path once heavily traveled by migrants trying to reach the U.S., has become nearly empty. This change comes amid strong immigration policies enforced by President Donald Trump and commitments by Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino to close off this dangerous route.

Recent reports show that just 10 migrants crossed the 2,600-mile jungle connection between Colombia and Panama in June. This marks a shocking 99.98% decrease from the height of migrant crossings during the Biden administration, which saw more than 82,000 migrants in August 2023 alone.

The decline is attributed to several strict measures, including mass deportations led by Trump and enhanced immigration patrols established by Mulino. Officials report that these actions are discouraging migrants from even starting this perilous journey.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that the situation has changed dramatically. “In Panama’s Darien Gap, migrants are now turning back before they even reach our border,” she noted, emphasizing the reduced number of crossings.

Meanwhile, the White House highlighted that under Trump’s policies, not a single undocumented migrant has been allowed to enter the U.S. in recent months. Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson explained that news of the U.S. secure borders has spread globally, leading to fewer migrants attempting the risky passage.

The DHS reiterated its focus on deporting those who have entered the country illegally. They urged current undocumented residents to voluntarily leave using the CBP Home App, which offers financial incentives for self-deportation.

“With the most secure border in American history, the DHS remains dedicated to enforcing our laws,” they added, encouraging illegal immigrants to take advantage of the support provided for their return.

This new landscape in the Darien Gap reflects the ongoing challenges and changes in migration patterns amid evolving immigration policies.
