A recent report from the United Nations reveals that India now has the largest diaspora in the world, with over 18.5 million Indians living in various countries as of 2024. The total number of international migrants is on the rise, with the UN estimating that there are 304 million migrants worldwide in 2024, up from 275 million in 2020. India remains the leading source country for international migrants, followed closely by China (11.7 million), Mexico (11.6 million), Ukraine (9.8 million), and Russia (9.1 million). Notably, Ukraine has seen a dramatic increase of 124% in its emigrant population between mid-2020 and mid-2024, marking the highest percentage increase among the top ten source countries, according to data from the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) for 2025.
Key Destinations for the Indian Diaspora
With a significant number of Indians migrating to West Asia, almost 40% of immigrants in the UAE are from India, making up about one-third of the nation’s total population.
In the United States, Indian-Americans rank as the second-largest Asian group, just behind Chinese-Americans, based on a report analyzing data from the US Census Bureau and the American Community Survey by the Pew Research Center.
The distribution of Indian migrants reveals that the largest communities are found in the United Arab Emirates (3.25 million), the United States (3.17 million), Saudi Arabia (1.95 million), and Canada (1.02 million), according to a report by Data for India, a platform analyzing data from the Indian government and international organizations. Other nations with sizable Indian migrant populations include Australia, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.
Historical Context of Migration
Much of India’s migrant population can trace their roots back to the 1947 Partition. For decades, people of Indian origin living in Pakistan made up the largest group of Indian emigrants, a trend that persisted until the mid-2000s. As of 2024, Pakistan continues to host about 1.6 million Indian-born individuals, which constitutes nearly 9% of the global Indian diaspora.
From 1990 to 2024, the number of Indian emigrants tripled from 6.5 million to 18.5 million, increasing their share of global out-migrants from 4% to 6%, according to Data for India, backed by UN statistics.
Saudi Arabia: A Traditional Destination
In 1990, alongside Pakistan, Saudi Arabia was known for hosting a large number of Indian migrants, showcasing strong labor migration flows between India and the Gulf region. Indian workers were instrumental in building the nation’s infrastructure and economy, particularly in sectors like construction, oil, and domestic services.
Today, Saudi Arabia is home to approximately 1.95 million Indian-born residents, while Canada has emerged as another significant destination, reflecting evolving patterns in skilled migration and education.
Between 2000 and 2020, nearly all countries saw an increase in their migrant populations, with India registering the largest rise of about 10 million. Other countries that followed include Syria, Venezuela, China, and the Philippines, as highlighted in the UN’s report titled “International Migration 2020 Highlights.”
Interestingly, India has also recently surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation, according to a report released by the United Nations Population Fund in 2023.
