Shubman Gill Eyes Major Milestone in Fourth Test Against England

As India prepares for the fourth Test against England, starting on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester, Shubman Gill is on the verge of a remarkable achievement. The young Indian batsman is just 25 runs away from breaking the record for the most runs by an Asian player in a bilateral Test series in England.

This record is held by Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 631 runs over four matches during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2006. Currently, Gill has tallied 607 runs from three matches, averaging an impressive 101.16, with his highest score being 269 in the first innings of the Birmingham Test.

Most Runs by an Asian Batsman in a Test Series in England

  • Mohammad Yousuf (Pakistan): 631 runs in 4 matches, 2006
  • Shubman Gill (India): 607 runs in 3 matches, 2025
  • Rahul Dravid (India): 602 runs in 4 matches, 2002
  • Virat Kohli (India): 593 runs in 5 matches, 2018
  • Sunil Gavaskar (India): 542 runs in 4 matches, 1979
  • Saleem Malik (Pakistan): 488 runs in 5 matches, 1992

Gill Faces a Tough Test Ahead

After a narrow 22-run loss in the Test at Lord’s, India must win in Manchester to keep their hopes of winning the series alive, as a draw would mean losing their chance. Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell has called the upcoming match the “biggest test of Gill’s career.”

Chappell commented, “The Old Trafford Test is going to be a significant challenge for Gill, not only as a batsman but also as a leader.” He noted that while Gill is learning quickly, the pressure is high. Chappell also praised Gill’s passion shown during the Lord’s match but emphasized that being assertive must be backed by hard work off the field.

In this series, India began with a disappointing five-wicket loss in Leeds but rebounded strongly with a massive 336-run victory at Edgbaston. However, the defeat at Lord’s has left them in a tough position as they head into this crucial Test.
