Former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch has expressed his support for MS Dhoni, suggesting that the cricket legend should return for another season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) recently suffered a four-wicket defeat to the Punjab Kings (PBKS), marking their elimination from IPL 2025. This loss is significant as it means CSK will miss the playoffs for two consecutive seasons, an unprecedented situation in their history.
In the wake of CSK’s disqualification, many have speculated about Dhoni’s future in the IPL. The team’s stand-in captain hinted at uncertainty regarding his return during the toss, saying that he wasn’t sure if he would play in the next match. However, Finch believes this was a light-hearted comment and is confident that Dhoni will be back for another season.
“It was just a playful moment. Those two have had some great exchanges at the toss over the years. It’s always been entertaining, and I’m sure we’ll see MS Dhoni again,” said Finch during an interview on JioHotstar.
Dhoni took over the captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined with an elbow injury early in the season. Unfortunately, this leadership change did not turn the team’s fortunes around. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK has won only one out of the five matches played, leaving them struggling at the bottom of the points table with just two wins in ten matches.
Historically, CSK has never finished at the bottom during Dhoni’s leadership, and they will be eager to improve their performance in the remaining four games to avoid this undesirable outcome. Their next match is against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 3 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
