Protest in Silchar Turns Violent Amidst Tensions Over Waqf Act
SILCHAR: A protest in Silchar, located in Assam’s Cachar district, escalated into violence on Sunday as demonstrators clashed with police. The protesters were voicing their concerns regarding the Waqf Act when some individuals began throwing stones at the officers. In response, police used canes to restore order amid the chaos.
The rally started early in the day, with people from the Berenga, Madhurband, and Kanakpur areas gathering at Badri Bridge to march toward Madhurband. Upon reaching their destination, a portion of the crowd sat down on the road in the Chamragudam area. This sit-in led to a confrontation with law enforcement.
District Magistrate Mridul Yadav enforced prohibitory measures under Section 163 of the BNSS across the district later that evening. Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta commented, "The protest took place without necessary permissions, especially with the model code of conduct in effect for upcoming panchayat elections. Although the rally began peacefully, some individuals broke through police barricades, and a few even attacked officers with stones."
Mahatta assured that those responsible for the violence would face legal consequences. Meanwhile, Azad Hossain Majumder, a representative of the protesters, spoke out against the actions of the violent few, expressing support for law enforcement measures taken against them.
