Arsenal celebrated a much-needed 1-0 victory against their London rivals, Chelsea, on Sunday, marking their first win in four matches of the Premier League. The decisive goal came from Mikel Merino, who scored with a header in the 20th minute, lifting the Gunners’ spirits as they aimed to close the gap with league leaders Liverpool.
Merino’s goal resulted from a perfectly taken corner kick by Martin Ødegaard. The Spanish midfielder managed to direct a header over Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez. Arsenal nearly doubled their lead in the second half when Merino attempted a side-footed volley, but Sanchez made an impressive save to keep the scoreline narrow.
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed his happiness with the win. In a post-match interview, he said, “It was an important game, and we wanted to win against a strong team. We worked hard and deserved this victory. Now, with the international break coming up, we can take a moment to regroup and hopefully return some injured players.”
On the other hand, Chelsea struggled to create scoring opportunities, missing several key players due to injuries. Without top scorer Cole Palmer and striker Nicolas Jackson, they found it difficult to challenge Arsenal’s defense. Their best chance arrived in the 37th minute when a volley from Marc Cucurella slipped through the hands of Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, but narrowly missed the goal.
With this win, Arsenal moves into second place in the league, trailing Liverpool by 12 points. Liverpool was scheduled to compete in the League Cup final against Newcastle United later that day, both teams having played 29 matches so far with nine more to go in the season.
Chelsea currently holds fourth place, just one point ahead of Manchester City and five points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest. Despite their struggles, midfielder Moisés Caicedo remained hopeful, stating, “We are aiming for Champions League football next season. The competition is close, but we need to focus on our own performance, that’s what matters most. Achieving Champions League football is our goal.”
