Bangladesh Thwarts Multiple Indian Efforts to Push People Across Its Borders

Tensions Rise Over Alleged Border Infringements Between India and Bangladesh

On June 4, 2026, Bangladesh announced that it successfully prevented several attempts by India to push individuals into its territory in the past day. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding undocumented migration and complicates efforts to strengthen relations between the two neighboring countries.

The border between India and Bangladesh stretches over 4,000 kilometers (around 2,500 miles) and crosses various terrains, making it challenging to monitor effectively. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reported detecting ten incidents where Indian officials allegedly tried to cross the border illegally.

Despite requests for comments, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and the Ministry of External Affairs have not responded to the situation. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in India has identified tackling undocumented migration as a priority. In recent months, they have focused on Bengali-speaking Muslims, whom they label as “illegal infiltrators,” complicating diplomatic relations following the removal of Bangladesh’s pro-India leader, Sheikh Hasina, in 2024.

BGB officials stated, “No one will be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally through the border.” They emphasized that any actions violating border management norms would meet strong resistance.

In response to rising concerns, Bangladesh has increased patrols and started public awareness campaigns along the border. Reports from analysts and rights groups describe India’s actions as informal transfers of people into Bangladesh, often referred to as “push-ins,” without following proper legal processes.

Earlier in May, India’s Foreign Ministry requested Bangladesh to verify the nationality of over 2,860 individuals believed to be living illegally in India. Recently, in the border district of Jhenaidah, BGB accused Indian BSF personnel of trying to move 30 to 35 individuals toward Bangladesh in a prison van. The BGB intervened, forcing the vehicle to retreat.

Bangladesh maintains that any individual identified as a national should be returned through official legal and diplomatic means, not forcibly crossed over the border.

This issue is expected to be discussed during upcoming talks between the border forces of both nations, scheduled in New Delhi from June 8 to 11.
