San Antonio Doctor Highlights the Essential Link Between Quality Sleep and Well-Being

SAN ANTONIO – Have you thought about how well you slept last night? Your sleep can have a big impact on how you feel and your overall health.

Dr. Suhaib Haq, a sleep specialist at University Health, emphasizes that good sleep is crucial for everyone. He noted, “No matter what your daily routine looks like, whether juggling one job or multiple roles like a parent, it’s important to prioritize sleep. Quality sleep helps you perform your daily tasks more effectively and safely.”

According to Dr. Haq, not getting enough sleep can lead to serious health issues, including heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and difficulties with focus. Most adults should aim for about seven hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

“Sleep is the time when our bodies can rest, recover, and recharge,” Dr. Haq explained. “Without proper sleep, your body cannot do all the necessary repair work it needs.”

He also shared that if you’re going to take a nap, it should be limited to 30 minutes. “Think of a nap like a snack; if you snack too close to dinner, it can ruin your meal,” he said.

To get the best sleep, Dr. Haq recommends avoiding caffeine for at least six hours before bed, exercising earlier in the day, and steering clear of heavy meals and alcohol as bedtime approaches.
