Press Conference Recap: Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly Share Insights After Medal Win
Q: Congratulations, Gayatri! You had a strong start in the first game but struggled in the later ones. Do you think the Chinese team figured out your game plan? What went wrong?
Gayatri Gopichand: Thank you! In the second set, I felt they played with a lot of patience and were able to counter our strategies. We had some great moments, especially with the back, but I realize I could have been more supportive at the net during the second set. In the third set, we had a few chances to score, but it just didn’t click for us.
Q: How do you plan to celebrate your bronze medal?
Treesa Jolly: First off, I want to thank our entire team for their support. They mentioned taking us out for lunch or dinner to celebrate. Ice cream sounds great too! I’m just happy about the medal and ready to enjoy a nice treat.
Q: Reflecting on the tournament, what do you think was the standout aspect of your play? What were your strengths, and how will you build on them moving forward?
Treesa Jolly: I think facing the Chinese players was quite challenging. They appeared more confident, especially in the first game. We had a lead but they quickly caught up. After the second game, a few mistakes on our part made us less confident, and we became too defensive. To win against them, we really need to be more aggressive in our play.
Q: What lessons will you take from this experience? Are you pleased with how you performed?
Treesa Jolly: This week has been incredible for us! We’ve had some unexpected wins and played some fantastic matches. There’s so much we can learn and take away from this tournament.
Q: Yesterday must have been a very emotional day for both of you. Was it challenging to return and compete again after such an emotional experience?
Gayatri Gopichand: Yes, yesterday’s match was intense and took a lot out of us mentally. Even though it was tough, I felt refreshed when we stepped onto the court today. Sometimes, mental fatigue can play a role.
Q: Do you think mental fatigue affected your play, especially with missed opportunities?
Treesa Jolly: Luck is definitely a part of the game. In critical moments, confidence is key, and everything has to align perfectly.
Q: How does it feel to be among the select few who have won a medal at the World Championships? Are you aware of this significant achievement?
Treesa Jolly: Absolutely! Being part of this exclusive group feels amazing. We have a long journey ahead, and I see this as just the beginning. This medal and the support we received, especially hearing about Arjun’s achievements this week, have definitely motivated us further in this tournament.
Thank you all for being here.
