Israeli Airstrike Claims Life in Southern Lebanon

BEIRUT: A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when an Israeli drone strike claimed the life of one person in the southern Lebanese town of Aita al-Shaab, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. This incident came just a day after the deadline for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon.

There has been no immediate response from the Israeli military regarding the strike.

As part of a ceasefire agreement reached last year, which was mediated by the U.S., February 18 was set as the deadline for Israel to pull out its forces from southern Lebanon. This agreement aimed to end the conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia.

However, Israeli officials have stated that some troops will remain at five specific positions along the border, which they believe are necessary for the country’s security.

In a related development, the Israeli military reported that it had killed a Hamas official in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah, which faced significant casualties during the previous conflict, has accused Israel of continuing to occupy Lebanese territory. The group has also stated that the responsibility for removing all Israeli forces lies with the Lebanese government.

Originally, Israel was supposed to withdraw by January 26, but this deadline was pushed to February 18 after allegations that Lebanon did not uphold its part of the agreement. In turn, Lebanon accused Israel of prolonging its military presence.

Additionally, the Health Ministry reported that two individuals were injured due to Israeli gunfire in the southern town of Al-Wazzani.
