Arizona Cardinals Face Crucial Decisions in NFL Draft

As the NFL Draft approaches, all eyes are on the Arizona Cardinals, who hold the No. 3 overall pick. With a variety of choices ahead, it’s clear that the Cardinals are at a pivotal moment. General Manager Monti Ossenfort may choose to trade down, a move he’s familiar with.

Future at Quarterback

Under first-time head coach Mike LaFleur, the Cardinals’ priority is to stabilize their quarterback situation. Recently, they released former first-round pick Kyler Murray and re-signed Jacoby Brissett, who stepped in successfully last season. However, Brissett is only a temporary solution.

The top quarterback in this draft is Ohio native Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman winner expected to be selected first by the Las Vegas Raiders. While Alabama’s Ty Simpson is another possibility, using the No. 3 pick on him might be a stretch, as he’s expected to be picked later in the first round.

Strengthening the Team

The Cardinals might also focus on their offensive line. They could select Francis Mauigoa from Miami or Spencer Fano from Utah. Alternatively, they could consider players like Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, or Arvell Reese from Ohio State.

Another option is Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love, especially given James Conner’s recent injury. The Cardinals added Tyler Allgeier and Zonovan Knight to their backfield, but the need for a strong running back remains.

Kyle Odegard, a Cardinals specialist, suggested that trading down might be a better strategy than reaching for one of the mentioned players.

Exploring Trade Opportunities

There’s also buzz around Miami’s edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., who might slip during the draft. Some believe if the Cardinals trade down, they could still land Bain and pick up additional assets for their team. Blake Allen Murphy shared a scenario where moving back could help secure a tackle while also allowing them to draft another quarterback later.

Jared Mueller and Easton Freeze echoed similar thoughts, indicating that the Cardinals are open to trade proposals. The Tennessee Titans, drafting fourth overall, might be particularly interested in what the Cardinals might offer.

Looking Ahead

Ossenfort has historically navigated these waters well. In a previous draft, he traded the No. 3 pick, moving back to No. 12 and then trading back up to No. 6 to select offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr.

As the draft approaches, it’s clear the Cardinals have significant decisions to make, and how they navigate this process could shape the future of the franchise.
