India captain Rohit Sharma recently made a notable appearance at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where he stood beside the prestigious Champions Trophy during celebrations for the stadium’s 50th anniversary on January 19. The event saw the presence of legendary cricket figures such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri, all sharing in the festive atmosphere organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association.
A heartwarming moment captured on video showed Gavaskar and Shastri inviting Rohit to join them near the trophy. In a display of humility, Rohit chose to stand back, allowing the cricketing legends to shine in the spotlight as they posed together right behind the trophy, while he stood at the far left of the scene.
Rohit did, however, express his determination to bring the Champions Trophy back to the Wankhede Stadium, hinting at potential celebrations in Mumbai if they succeed. He recalled the joyful moments last year when India celebrated their T20 World Cup victory with a grand bus parade along Marine Drive, culminating in a ceremony at the same stadium.
Speaking to the crowd, Rohit said, “We have another tournament ahead. I am confident that the wishes of 140 crore people will be with us in Dubai.” This statement earned him cheers from the audience. He further emphasized their commitment by stating, “We will do everything we can to bring this trophy back here to Wankhede.”
In a significant announcement, Rohit Sharma has been appointed captain of India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, which starts on February 19. Shubman Gill will serve as the vice-captain, with notable players like Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah included in the lineup. The selection committee head, Ajit Agarkar, shared this news in Mumbai on January 18.
Reflecting on India’s previous T20 World Cup victory, Rohit fondly remembered the celebrations that followed. After their win, thousands gathered for a bus parade, including several cricket stars, who captivated fans with their enthusiasm. Rohit recounted the challenges they faced post-victory due to a storm in Barbados, yet planning for their homecoming celebration was already underway.
Rohit was eager for the World Cup trophy to return to Wankhede, recalling how earlier victories in 2007 and 2011 were celebrated there. He mentioned, “For us, it was vital to bring the trophy of 2024 back to Wankhede.”
India’s upcoming Champions Trophy campaign kicks off with a match against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a crucial face-off against Pakistan on February 23. The final league game is scheduled for March 2. This Champions Trophy may mark a significant point in Rohit Sharma’s career, as he was part of the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup team and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning squad, although he missed the 2011 World Cup.
As Pakistan prepares to host the tournament, memories of their triumphant win against India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final in London linger, setting the stage for an exciting competition ahead.
