Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently shared exciting news about a potential biopic focused on the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan. During a Facebook Live session on July 16, he revealed that the state government is in talks with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to helm this ambitious project.
Sarma expressed that the goal of the film is to showcase the life and contributions of one of Assam’s most celebrated historical figures to both national and international audiences through a grand cinematic experience.
He noted that discussions with Dhar are ongoing, highlighting Dhar’s prior successes, including the National Award-winning film “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and his upcoming project, “Dhurandhar.” The Chief Minister plans to meet Dhar in August for more in-depth discussions about the film.
Importantly, Sarma emphasized that the project isn’t solely reliant on Aditya Dhar. He stated, “If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The main aim is to ensure that a magnificent biopic on Lachit Borphukan gets made.”
This biopic would represent a significant step for the Assam government, as it would be the first time they support a Bollywood-scale film about Lachit Borphukan’s life. Sarma believes it’s vital to introduce both Indian and global audiences to Assam’s rich history and the military prowess of their revered commander.
Lachit Borphukan is regarded as one of Assam’s greatest military leaders, celebrated for his pivotal role in leading the Ahom army to victory against Mughal forces in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671. His courage and strategic skills have made him a lasting symbol of patriotism and resilience in Assam. Through this film, the state hopes to share his remarkable story and an important chapter of Indian history with a broader audience.
