For many years, trade unions had very little impact in the UK’s tech industry. The sector was filled with well-paying jobs, and many company leaders had a relaxed view towards employment, resulting in low union membership.

However, changes in the job market and the increasing use of artificial intelligence have raised concerns about job security. This situation has given union leaders a chance to step in and advocate for workers.

Sarthak, a software developer at Deliveroo who joined the company in 2022 after working in banking, shared his thoughts on the current environment. He noted, “It used to be that if you lost a job, there were plenty of other opportunities available.” Now, he sees a troubling trend where workers seem to be easily discarded. “People are being treated like they’re disposable,” he expressed, highlighting the need for better job security in the industry.
