Powerful Earthquake and Explosion Devastate Newly Reopened Mall in Japan

A shopping mall in southern Japan was destroyed by a strong earthquake on Tuesday, just weeks after it reopened following extensive renovations from a previous disaster. The Aeon Mall, located in Kumamoto Prefecture, had celebrated its grand opening on June 13, highlighting the area’s recovery from the 2016 earthquake.

This recent earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 6.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck near Kumamoto during the late afternoon. Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported it even stronger at 7.1. The quake led to significant structural damage and a subsequent explosion that rocked the building.

Officials confirmed that around 200 shoppers were evacuated safely, but about 20 to 30 employees remained unaccounted for after the explosion blew out exterior walls and exposed the mall’s steel framework. Rescuers were unable to enter the damaged structure due to concerns about aftershocks.

Witnesses reported smelling gas just before the explosion, prompting quick action by mall staff to help visitors escape. The Aeon Mall had been a key symbol of recovery for Kumamoto, which was hit hard by the 2016 earthquake.

The earthquake occurred around 4:30 PM local time and was located approximately 9 miles north of Kumamoto at a depth of about 6 miles. An initial tsunami advisory was quickly lifted, but the quake caused at least 50 injuries and sparked multiple fires. Kumamoto Airport also temporarily closed as a safety precaution.

The mall, which featured around 200 stores, a movie theater, and ample parking, had become a local favorite, welcoming millions of visitors each year. When it reopened, Aeon positioned the project as part of a broader “re-start” initiative, emphasizing both the mall’s anniversary and the region’s offensive against the challenges posed by natural disasters.

As evening approached, rescue efforts paused due to ongoing aftershocks, leaving families anxiously waiting for updates on their loved ones believed to be inside.
