The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned about heavy rainfall in certain areas of Tamil Nadu this Saturday, along with a “yellow rain alert” for the next day, Sunday. The forecast indicates that districts like Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, and Karaikal could see substantial rainfall in isolated locations.
In an additional advisory, the IMD announced a warning for thunderstorms and lightning from January 12 to January 14, affecting Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. According to the weather forecast from Chennai’s regional meteorological center, light to moderate rain is expected in some areas along the coast, while the interior regions of Tamil Nadu are likely to remain dry. Morning hours may also bring mist and haze in several parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the IMD expects light to moderate rain across many places along the coast and in a few spots in the interior areas, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning occurring in isolated locations.
The IMD attributed these weather changes to a cyclonic circulation in the lower troposphere over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby regions.
In terms of broader weather patterns, the IMD has predicted that light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, may occur in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Kerala during the same period, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in Tamil Nadu and neighboring areas.
Meanwhile, northern India is experiencing a cold wave, with dense fog blanketing many cities, including the iconic Taj Mahal. On Saturday morning, New Delhi and the National Capital Region were particularly impacted, resulting in low visibility and chilly temperatures, which dropped to around 11 degrees Celsius.
The weather forecast for the day indicated possible light rain or thunderstorms and a generally cloudy sky, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 15 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Although there were no reports of flight diversions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, train services were delayed due to poor visibility.
The IMD noted that the fog had reduced visibility significantly in some areas, and thunderstorms were anticipated throughout the day. Meanwhile, several regions in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and eastern Uttar Pradesh are experiencing cold wave conditions.
Overall, weather alerts have been issued in various regions, and residents are advised to stay updated on changing conditions as heavy rains and cold temperatures impact daily life.
