AUS vs IND: Five Factors Behind India’s MCG Defeat—Beyond Jaiswal’s Missed Catches

India faced a stark 184-run defeat against Australia in the recent Melbourne Test, leaving their hopes in the World Test Championship (WTC) uncertain. This match not only highlighted the team’s fragile state but also revealed several underlying issues that need immediate attention.

During the game, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a challenging day in the field, dropping three crucial catches. His first misstep occurred early on when he let a tricky chance slip from Usman Khawaja’s bat. Later, he dropped an easier catch that allowed Marnus Labuschagne to add more runs after he was on 46. In the final over before the tea break, he missed another chance against Pat Cummins. Although these mistakes were significant, Jaiswal showed remarkable character by scoring 84 runs in India’s second innings, demonstrating his mental strength amidst the pressure.

### Key Issues in India’s Loss at the MCG

#### Struggles of Senior Players
The performance of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli raised concerns. On the final day, when India needed stability, Rohit fell for just 9 runs, while Kohli managed a mere 3 runs — both dismissals came from uncharacteristically poor shots. Rohit has had a tough series, averaging just 6.20 from six innings. Although Kohli started strong with a century in Perth, he has struggled lately, scoring only 62 runs in the subsequent matches. Their inability to build innings has been detrimental to India’s efforts.

#### Questionable Style of Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant’s shot choices have drawn mixed reactions from fans. He caught the spotlight on Day 3 when, after scoring 28 runs, he attempted a risky scoop shot and got caught by Nathan Lyon. This dismissal came at a crucial time, raising questions about his judgment during tense moments.

#### Booing Bumrah’s Lone Fight
Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as India’s standout bowler in the series, claiming 30 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.83. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received sufficient support from his fellow bowlers like Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Harshit Rana. Bumrah ended up bowling more than 141 overs across the four Tests, leading to visible exhaustion during the matches, which reflects serious bowling concerns for the Indian team.

#### Instability in the Batting Lineup
India grappled with a lack of stability in their batting order, particularly in the Melbourne Test. The initial pair of Jaiswal and KL Rahul looked promising, notably scoring over 200 runs together in Perth, a first for Indian openers in Australia. However, the return of Rohit Sharma disrupted their rhythm, as he resumed his role as opener after missing the Perth Test. This change affected the confidence built by the initial pairing.

#### Tactical Issues Under Rohit Sharma
Rohit’s captaincy faced criticism for a lack of aggression at key moments. Despite Bumrah successfully breaking through Australia’s top order, the Indian side let the lower order, including Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins, build a substantial lead. Rohit’s conservative tactics and defensive changes allowed Australia to recover, giving them an unassailable lead that India couldn’t overcome.

### Looking Forward
While Jaiswal’s dropped catches contributed to the defeat, they weren’t the sole cause of India’s loss. The team must address a range of complex issues involving inconsistent performances, tactical oversights, and an over-dependence on individual stars.

With the upcoming Sydney Test being crucial for India’s WTC aspirations, focus needs to shift towards rectifying these underlying problems. Collective effort, improved tactics, and a more stable lineup are essential for India’s comeback against a confident Australian team.
