American Released from Syrian Prison Following Assad’s Fall, Evacuated by US Forces

U.S. Citizen Released from Syrian Prison After Seven Months

An American man, Travis Timmerman, has been safely evacuated from Syria after spending seven months imprisoned. He was rescued by rebels who recently ousted former President Bashar al-Assad and was transported out of the country on a U.S. military helicopter, as reported by a U.S. official who chose to remain anonymous.

Timmerman, 33, said he traveled to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage before he was detained for illegally entering the country. He shared that during his captivity, he was among a group that included 70 women—some accompanied by their children—who were also freed during the uprising.

While held in the notorious Palestine Branch prison, Timmerman stated that he was treated relatively well compared to others. "I was fed and had water," he told the Associated Press. However, he did mention that he was often unable to access the bathroom when needed but claimed he was not beaten and that the guards were decent to him.

He described a harrowing experience, indicating that he could hear the sounds of torture inflicted on other captives daily. Timmerman explained that he was allowed out of his cell for bathroom breaks three times a day. When rebels stormed the prison following Assad’s fall, he recounted they forcibly broke down the door to his cell.

In a video released online, Timmerman was seen lying on a mattress and was assured by those who rescued him that he would soon return home safely.

The Palestine Branch, which has a grim reputation for brutality, has drawn attention for its harsh treatment of prisoners. Human Rights Watch has documented severe abuses within its walls, including torture methods like electrocution and beatings.

In light of the recent uproar against the Assad regime, many prisoners have now been freed, prompting loved ones to search for missing relatives. Reports from former inmates reveal the harsh realities faced within these prisons, including inadequate food and physical abuse.

As families of the liberated prisoners seek information about their loved ones, stories of survival and suffering continue to emerge.
